Notes on Using Audacity and Podcasting

Open Source software for Podcasting: Audacity - comes in Windows and MacOSX "flavors".
(ie, recording your audio for the MP3 file used in Podcasting!)

NOTE: make sure you get the "Lame MP3 Incoder" for your particular "flavor" from the
same URL above.

Audacity settings:

1. Under File, Preferences
* audio IO tab (card)
* recording settings: channels - set to 1
* Quality tab - 44.1 Hrz.
* 16 bit rate
* File format - wav 16 bit pcm (record un-compressed)
* MP3 export - bit rate - set to 64

Recording levels
After recording a session, take a silent sample - to reduce noise.

Post production
Reducing noise, Normalization, Encoding

1. select a 10 second sample of silence
2. Go to Effects menu - noise removal
3. click Get noise profile
4. go back to the Effects menu.  Select noise removal
5. select areas of your clip OR the entire recording that you want affect.

Normalization
1. select sections that have "low audio"
2. Go  to Effect menu and select amplify - slide the scale
3. Then select the entire recording and then do the same: Effect amplify set.
    (this will "equalize" the audio level for the entire clip)

Encoding
File Export MP3
